Our Mission
Interrobang Theatre Project is dedicated to excellence in producing visceral, smart, substantial, and timely classic plays, rarely produced texts, and new American plays. ITP strives to build and encourage a new generation of theatregoers, to engage our community through challenging plays in an ongoing dialogue of ideas, to create an exciting lobby life that will allow us all the space and time to talk about the work we typically share alone in the dark, to maintain an environment in which artists can do their very best work, and to uphold live theatre and the act of collective imagining as a powerful and vital means to change our world one play at a time. ITP is not recommended for audiences who prefer theatre to be benign or familiar.
Our Values
We value excellence in all we do. ITP strives to produce theatre of the highest professional quality. We challenge ourselves and our guests to reach far beyond the limit of our own expectations.
We value thought-provoking, entertaining, and challenging live professional theatre. We will create theatre that is an event, turning observers into active participants. ITP presents an array of theatrical styles and texts in our programming and we work to lead audiences without losing them. By its nature, live theatre involves risk and we recognize the need to present programming which may provoke strong reaction.
We value life-long education. ITP seeks to provide substantial and varied opportunities for learning about the human experience through the art of theatre.
We value a strong, vibrant arts community. ITP is committed to playing a leadership role in the greater Chicago arts community, and to expanding public awareness of the essential contribution the arts make to society.
We value the contribution of our artists and our staff. ITP seeks to attract outstanding professionals to join our ensemble. We support the concept of ITP as an “artistic home,” which engenders a sense of pride, ongoing and repeatable collaboration, and mutual support among all who work here. As we grow, we will seek to provide these individuals with the best possible working environment, compensation, benefits, and support, within the constraints of our available resources.
We value all who have a stake in our success. ITP is committed to building and sustaining a vital connection among all its stakeholders: audience, artists, staff, donors, volunteers, our Board, the Chicago arts community, the larger theatrical community, students, teachers, learners and inventors of all ages.
We value diversity. ITP strives to provide opportunities for diverse artistic expression, as well as diverse artists, staff and audience. Diversity is a wide-ranging value, encompassing, but not limited to, diversity in aesthetics, age, class, disability, ethnicity, gender, geography, race and sexual orientation.
We value the long-term viability of our theatre. ITP wants to be an indispensable contributor to the quality of life in Chicago. To that end, we will maintain financial strength and stability as a means to achieve greater artistic freedom. We seek to build long-term human, physical and financial resources. We practice sound fiscal responsibility and strive for the financial growth that enhances our opportunities to expand our contribution to society.
